For our representation of these
key terms, we created a collage of pictures in the shape of a question mark. We
chose the question mark because we feel that all of these terms can be changed
and manipulated by the author. Each person can chose to what to include, what
to emphasize, how to present it to their audience etc. so the question mark
shows that the combination of all these terms is different for all people.
We think the collage is the
perfect representation of all of these terms because it really reflects who we
are as writers, researchers and thinkers. Both of us draw inspiration from many
different sources and our writing process is constantly changes as we learn
what works best for us. Also, as students, we are engaged in many different
activities and by using a collage it emphasizes how we are multi dimensional
people. Many different things, people, activities, characteristics, passions,
etc come together to make up who we are.
This is also shown in the Russell
and Yanez article about Genre Theory. This article discusses the importance of
showing students how what is learned in one class can be applied to many other
classes and even after school. We both believe that this is very important and
definitely something we have experienced in this class as well as outside of
school. We have learned about reflection, audience, purpose, etc. in this class
but that knowledge can be used throughout my business classes and professional
career.
I think Vatz’s article about
Rhetorical situation also applies to our collage. This is because he emphasizes
the importance of the rhetor and how they control the situation. This is
emphasized in our key terms because each word we chose reflects something that
can be altered, designed, or manipulated by the author. It can vary greatly by
whomever choses to engage in it just like how each person who looks at our
collage can interpret it differently.

Me and Paul really liked how you guys used the question mark to show that all these terms and definitions can be changed by what a rhetor chooses to make salient and how he choose to portray his opinion.
ReplyDeleteI really like the format you chose to represent your key terms. I think that it is creative and appealing. I immediately was drawn to the "pretty colors." It accurately portrays how a rhetor is in control of what to make salient and how the audience interprets information. The question mark hit home in that we all start out in our writing process with a question. What should I write about? How should I research? Or relating to the course, "How will I appeal to an audience?" Overall, nice defense and representation!
ReplyDeleteI like the idea of using a question mark to represent the writing process as you see it. I agree, I often find myself writing in a different way each time depending on the subject and the audience. Good connection between your collage and the articles you used. Something I would have liked to see is more explanation and visual representation of other key terms. In the collage, you included an image of "purpose" - why was this the only one you used and what is its significance. What are some other terms you could have used?
ReplyDeleteI really like the idea of a question mark in your collage. I agree that each author can manipulate the key terms in their own way but I would have liked to see what key terms you guys view as most important.
ReplyDeleteThis is fantastic! The overarching idea of personal interpretation (as proposed by Vatz) is perfectly represented by the question mark. Further, the collage represents the intermixing and connection of concepts. I would also argue that your could use Johnson's article about good ideas to support your image because good ideas come from a variety of sources.
ReplyDeleteI like how you used a timeline of pictures to explain the situation. What did you use to create this? word? really cool idea.
ReplyDeleteI liked this piece because it is a lot more realistic in that everyone is very different. We try to make these diagrams and designs, but people are very easily swayed. Overall your piece demonstrates a much more realistic view of how writing and research are done. Good Job.
