Lit Review: In-Class Work Day

In about 200-300 words, explain your visual representation: what's your purpose of your lit review? What are some of your themes? What sources will you use within each theme? Finally, then discuss what's next: where do you need to do to start drafting your lit review.

  1. The purpose of my lit review will be to synthesize my research that I currently have. In other words, I will be taking all of my research and connecting them with one another using major themes that tie them altogether. As for my current themes I do not have any yet because I have yet to find popular sources. I don't want to construct any kind of themes or start making connections because I feel that most of my academic articles all have the same kind of themes, so I want to gather all my information first and then I will begin to make connections. Before that I do have some idea in that I am trying to find popular sources that focus on the social and personal effects of gaming rather than the academic because most of my scholarly resources speak on this matter. In other words, my three big themes will each be put in a category of academic, social, and personal. Since I first need to find popular resources this is my main goal right now. I don't believe I will have too much of a problem with making the actual ties because I have some idea of what my ties will be. So right now my main goal is finding my last few resources and then I just need to make all the connections.

  2. My picture of my pier review starts with my introduction. I used the idea of ADHD being everywhere in America and the thought that everyone thinks they have it conceptualize my introduction and topic. This topic is a big issue today because some people (specifically parents and teachers) see their children (usually boys) have tendencies of not being able to sit still and immediately thinks the child has ADHD.
My first theme is what is ADHD. This is almost a joke because currently, all of my articles list different symptoms when describing ADHD. This will be used to show that ADHD has become a broad umbrella term for people who think that younger children cannot sit through seven hours of class and be expected to remember everything that they have learned.
My second theme is really two themes into 1 and is the misdiagnosing and over prescription of ADHD and its medications. This also is almost a joke because the pharmaceutical companies make billions of dollars yearly on these prescriptions and the US makes up 85% of the market for these drugs.
My conclusion is then is ADHD real or is it just the evolution of children and the over diagnoses of these drugs. I will then reiterate the issue of the pharmaceutical companies and their control over the over-prescription of these drugs that are harmful to small children and who they are.

  3. I researched electricity sources. The visual representation of this research is a diagram where the four major sources of electricity that I researched are represented by four squares in the middle of the page. Lines connect these squares to various bubbles. The bubbles represent pros and cons. When a line is connected between an energy source and a pro/con, it means that the pro/con applies to that energy source. These pros and cons are the large issues of my topic, rather than the finer points. They are good indicators of what people have deemed as important in determining which electricity source is best. The purpose of my lit review is to give the reader a summary of my research. It highlights the important aspects of the topic. This summary provides a basic knowledge of the topic that will help readers to understand the claims I will make in my research paper. Some themes in my research are environmental impacts, water usage, cost, sustainability, and safety. Many of my sources mention these themes, so in that way there are connections between my sources. However, in order to start drafting my lit review, I need to find more connections between my sources. I also want to find some more obscure themes, as most of mine are pretty obvious.

  4. The purpose of my lit review is to draw connections between my sources. I know the results that each of the sources collected, now it is my job to relate the sources in a way that follows certain themes. Some of the themes that I have come up with are, sleeping’s relation to academic success in college students. Another is how sleeping has the ability to affect reflexes and attentiveness. I also developed a theme that focuses on the affect that small amounts of sleep have on physiological health. Finally, I decided to add a fourth theme, as it was coming up in my research quite a bit, which is the affect that sleep has on psychological processes and health.

I have found several sources that relate to each of these themes. An article by LeAnne Forquer explains how little sleep can inhibit learning ability. Another source by HealthDay News examines the affect that little amounts of sleep have on memory and concentration. These two sources interconnect because they both focus on the interplay between academic success and little sleep. Also, even though Forquer specifically references little sleep inhibiting academic learning it can relate to the observation that little sleep correlates with one’s concentration because lower concentration would relate to lower academic success.

My next theme focuses on reflexes and attentiveness and how they correlate with sleep patterns. One source by Forquer explains how driving ability is impaired when a student gets little sleep. This connects with the article from HealthDay which references the relation between decreased concentration and reflexes caused by little sleep. Driving and concentration go hand-in-hand therefore the two sources are talking about similar ideas.

I have only found one source that fits under the theme of “effects on physiological health.” I references the affect that little sleep can have on one’s immune system and physical processes.

My last theme has two sources that relate to it. One is by Mark Wong who uses tests such as the Rosenburg Self Esteem questionnaire in order to measure a students self-esteem based on the amount of sleep they get. This interplays with my other source which examines the connection between little sleep and mood swings along with the susceptibility to drug use. These two sources are connected because they both deal with psychological systems. Mood swings and self-esteem correlate. Also, mood swings can also be indicative of drug use.

In order to begin drafting my lit review I need to find more sources that reflect the themes that I have been seeing in my research thus far. I still need to find more popular sources and one more scholarly source. Other than that, I think my themes are well laid out and my sources fit under each category well.

  5. I first thought creating a visual representation of a lit review was a waste of time. I asked myself, “why can’t I just start now?” My ignorance was quickly put in its place when I tried making this visual representation. I had an entirely wrong idea of what the lit review was supposed to be and would have gone on writing it the wrong way. The purpose of the lit review is to contextualize research and synthesize sources, based on common themes. My themes are all centered around Steve Job’s influence on Apple Inc., and they include his “passion for the product,” “vision for the company,” “marketing genius,” “management style and character traits,” and finally, “numbers,” or the results of Steve Job’s influence. I am sure that I will not end up using all of my sources, but I will use my popular and scholarly sources with these themes for the lit review. First, I need to complete my lit review visual outline. I am sorting through all of my sources and figuring out where they all go, according to these themes I have deduced. From there, I will need to commit to text how all the sources connect to each theme and to each other.

  6. My visual representation starts with my topic in the center, which is “the psychological effects of running”. If you are not a runner, why should this even matter to you? Well, the research is showing how the vast majority of psychological effects are seen as positive. Whether you run or not, the research out there that I am going to review could either keep you running or make you rethink if it’s really as awful as you may believe. I have four themes, but I am only going to use three in my lit review. The three that I am using are "running is a drug", "running is a drug prevention method", and "running makes people happier". My web has all of my sources separated into bubbles coming off of the theme that I thought they applied to. Some of the sources apply to more than one theme, though, so I have arrows pointing to those other themes. I also have random bubbles with a couple more sources that I might include but haven’t decided yet. For each of my themes I am going to be using 3-5 sources. The diagram made me see that some themes are widely more supported by either scholarly or popular sources but not really a mix of both. For example, my theme of running as a drug prevention method is really only supported by the scholarly articles I have found because they need to include more experiments and research. What’s next for me is also scribbled on my lit review web. I am going to find more articles to support my answers to my questions in relation to college students which will appear in my actual essay.

  7. My visual representation consisted of my main topic in the middle of a circle. From this point I had multiple themes branching out from my theme, which included "Americans obsession with their rights", "Americans are different than others" and "The broken political system in the U.S." From these themes I branched out further into which sources applied to each theme and branching off from those sources were how they applied. My visual representation was more or less a giant circle, expanding from the beginning point which was my topic, how does gun control affect violent crime rates in the United States.
Some of the sources that apply to each theme are the documentary "bowling for Columbine", the article "Hold Your Fire" written by David Kopel, while almost all of the statistics I will be using in my paper will be from either "The Impact of Gun Control and Gun Ownership Levels on Violence Rates" written by Gary Kleck or "Gun Prevalence, Gun Control and Violence" which is an article from a reference handbook on crimes in the United States.
Regarding my lit review, I still have a good amount of work to get done. I have all my academic sources but I still need two more popular sources. I will hopefully be finding those this weekend. Besides this I just need to sit down and start drafting out my lit review which I am not expecting to be easy at all.

  8. My lit review will present the two sides to the debate about Title IX. The debate is whether or not title IX is out of date and should be reevaluated or if its implementation is the only thing that needs work. I still need to do some more research on this topic since I basically just came up with it today :). However I do have some ideas of themes. I think I will talk about opportunities for men, proportionality, and revenue vs. non revenue sports. I could also just have my themes be the two sides of the debate... but I might just save that for my essay and use that as how I organize it.

As far as sources go, I have them organized right now based on the sides of the debate they support so I need to change the organization to fit underneath the themes.

I still have a lot of work to do but first I will finish getting research and finalize my themes. Then, I will make an outline to organize everything so that I know what to include and where to put it. I will then start to write yay!

  9. The purpose of the lit review is to take the research I have done and make connections between my themes and my sources. While all of my sources relate back to my main topic, it is a good intermediate step to see which sources I will be looking at when I begin to write the essay. So far the themes I plan on using in my lit review are employment and privacy. For privacy, I currently have three scholarly articles relating to it and one popular source. The articles I have talk about privacy with respect to third party sites having access to personal information and also a false sense of security that people have when it comes to putting personal information online. For employment, I have two scholarly sources that relate back to the theme. One of my sources is being used for privacy and for employment. In general, these sources talk about the different ways that companies are using facebook in relation to hiring and impact on current employees. Before I can start my lit review, i still need to find more sources. I only have one popular source right now, but it has links to other articles relating to my topic. Also the scholarly sources I do have are very similar and I want to find an article that has a different perspective on my topic. On a positive note, my themes seem to all be connecting nicely.

  10. In class lit review practice
The purpose of my lit review is to lay out all the information I have gathered and organize it into themes. My themes include: The evolving sport of rock climbing, sports in college leading to success, what student expect from college's and what is expected out of colleges today.
    - the evolving sport of rock climbing
    o background/history
    o Increased in popularity
    • NYtimes article
    o Definitions
    - sports in college leading to success
o recreational sports lead to higher GPA
    • A study of the relationship
o climbing qualifies as sport or exercise
    • therefore can derive the same benefits
    • Journal of Undergraduate Kinesiology Research
    •
    - college students lack of exercise, (need motivation)
o climbing meets both these needs
    • Journal of Undergraduate Kinesiology Research
    - what students expect from college's and what is expected out of colleges today
    o Collegiate recreational sports
o increased infrastructure for student entertainment and use
    • look at other colleges around the USA and amount of money they have been spending
    • also look at CC and CU, both building new climbing walls.
o Need to keep up with today’s college stigmas, especially in Colorado

  11. Most people want to know how a certain surgical procedure affects or will affect them before they enter the operation room. As the number one surgical procedure in the United States, I decided to examine the effects that abortion has on women. I noticed four different categories of effects during my initial research: mental, physical, legislative, and cultural. For my lit review I plan on further detailing the effects within these four categories (mental effects, physical effects, legislative effects, and cultural effects).

Originally my research started with examining only the mental outcomes of abortion because my fundamental inquiry centers on this specific concept. Therefore I conducted thorough research only on the psychological effects of abortion. However, as made evident in class today, I must continue finding in-depth research not only on the psychological effects but also the physical, legislative, and cultural effects of abortion in order to successfully write this lit review.

I secured several sources that I want to use in my lit review. For writing about the mental effects of abortion I plan on consulting The Cost of Choice, Abortion: The Emotional Implications, “Psychological Responses After Abortion,” and the TV show “Surrender the Secret.” For writing about the physical, psychological, and cultural effects I plan on consulting The Cost of Choice. I must do more research to find additional sources for these categories.

  12. The purpose of my Lit Review is going to be analyzing my sources. In other words, I’m going to read through my sources, find multiple themes and connect the ones that are related to other sources. One of the themes that I found is “Commodification of ghosts” and the sources I’m going to use with that theme are “Ghosts in Folklore” and “Essay on superstition,” these sources talk about how ghosts and the supernatural have been commoditized through multiple methods. The next theme I’ve found is “Physical Interaction with Ghosts,” the sources that are connected to this theme, thus to each other, are “Ghosts in Folklore, “True Ghost stories” and “essay on superstition.” The last theme is “Intention of ghosts” where the sources I’m going to use show the connection between intentions of ghosts through my different sources. My sources for the last theme are “Christian demonology and mythology,” “Canadian Haunting” and “stories of ghostly encounters.”

What I need to do next is find some popular sources and they may help me find some other themes and then I’ll just do some further research and start writing my lit review.

  13. The purpose of my lit review is to synthesize the knowledge which already exists surrounding my research topic. I’ve collected a huge jumble of information, so this will get me to sort it out in terms of main concepts and themes which are more manageable and analyzable.

    My themes/sources:
    1. Colonialism and the Origins of Orientalism
    -Edward Said’s “From Orientalism”
    -Mark Alloula’s “The Colonial Harem”
    2. The Power of Imagistic Media
-Brian Ott’s “Intro to Critical Media Studies”
**Stuart Hall’s “The Whites of their Eyes”
-Sut Jhally’s “Reel Bad Arabs” (documentary film)
**David Griffin’s TED Talk: “How photography connects us”
    3. Present Day American Orientalism
**Sut Jhally’s “Reel Bad Arabs” (documentary film)
    -Brian Ott’s “Marxist Analysis”
-Radhika Parameswaran’s “Local Culture in Global Media: Excavating Colonial and Material Discourses in National Geographic”
**“What’s Wrong with Sex and the City 2: Manifestations of Orientalism”-Wordpress blog
**Hadley Freeman’s “The death of Sex and the City”
**YouTube video on dumb questions Middle Eastern people have been asked in NYC.

** = popular sources (as opposed to academic)

What’s next? I’m going to reread, or at least skim, through each of my sources to find stand out quotes and ideas which support my three themes.
